Cappadocia Private Tour Part 1

On Tuesday we hired out a private tour for us in Cappadocia. Our tour guide was the hostel owner who took us in his car. It was a standard tour that the hostel runs and was excellent; all three of us really enjoyed it.

Our first stop was going to a bigger and better underground city in Kaymakli. Nathan wasn’t feeling up to it, so there was just Kim and I, and our guide and his helper. Our guide definitely had some flair to him.

The city was far more complex than the one we saw on Tuesday, and people lived in it permanently underground. We were only able to see 10% of it but it is a massive structure. And it was incredibly cold inside. You could see your breath and when we first went inside, we ran back to the car to get long sleeved shirts.

One of the coolest parts of it was where we had to climb up vertical chutes. These were about 1m by 1m and the longest was about 8m tall. There were small hand and footholds on the way up with some 2x4 blocks that had been nailed in to add some extra grip and support. Like everything we’ve found here, safety is optional, and this would never be open in the manner it is in Canada.

We then went to an area that had a couple more cave churches, the Buckle Church and Snake Church. But this was the 3rd church named Buckle Church that we had seen, so I’m not too sure how to identify their uniqueness.
